Last year, Nordic Games gave Darksiders II’s Death another shot at life in a “Deathinitive edition.” This year, the publisher gives us another oddly named update.
Darksiders “Warmastered” Edition will be out later this year for current-generation consoles and PC. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will support 60 frames per second. The Wii U edition sports 30 frames per second.
Nordic Games acquired Vigil’s Darksiders franchise from THQ’s bankruptcy. The series has laid dormant since 2012, when Darksiders II was released, with fans cautiously hopeful we’d see the final two planned installments.
The Darksiders series takes place after the end of the world. In the first title, the Horseman War is accused of bringing about the apocalypse prematurely. He must fight to clear his name.
Artist Joe Madureira, whose style defines the two existing Darksiders games, has moved on to a new studio. Airship Syndicate successfully raised funds on Kickstarter for Battle Chasers: Nightwar (also being published by Nordic Games).
Vigil Games has since disbanded, with a number of members back together at Gunfire Games. That studio is responsible for the excellent Oculus Rift title Chronos and, in fact, the Darksiders II Deathinitive edition. The developer’s website does not yet mention the Darksiders Warmastered edition if it is the studio tapped for the ports.

Our Take
Darksiders was a fresh take on the classic Zelda formula. With compelling art, a clever story, and engaging gameplay, it won a loyal following. The sequel improved on much of the first game’s foundation, but Darksiders is absolutely worth your time if you’ve not played it.
