The first trailer for Ghost in the Shell, based on the cyberpunk Japanese manga of the same name, was released earlier today at a live event in Tokyo. The live-action adaptation, which stars Scarlett Johansson, hits theaters next year.
Johansson plays the lead role of the android Major Motoko Kusanagi. This casting choice has resulted in controversy, with critics calling it a form of whitewashing. The first trailer is nonetheless filled with Japanese imagery, such as a robot geisha. Check out the trailer below for yourself.
The teaser ends with a mysterious voice telling Major that, "Everything they told you was a lie. They did not save your life, they stole it." Ghost in the Shell releases on March 31.
