Metal Gear Survive Gets February 20 Release Date

Konami's first foray into original Metal Gear projects following Hideo Kojima's acrimonious split with the company, the multiplayer Metal Gear Survive, has gotten a release date of February 20 in the US and February 22 in Europe.

The game takes place shortly after Ground Zeroes, where members of Big Boss' base were sucked into a dimensional portal rather than dying in the ambush as Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain indicated. Four of the survivors find themselves in an otherwordly wasteland and do their best to survive against zombie-like enemies.

The initial announcement caused consternation among Metal Gear fans who felt Konami was dragging the series through the mud in an attempt to squeeze money from it, but recent previews (including our own from E3 by Joe Juba and TGS by Kimberly Wallace) paint a picture that, at very least, indicates the game has a right to exist.

Regardless of what fans think, Konami is hoping Metal Gear Survive can manage to get on its own two feet and, well, survive when it releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC next February.

Our Take
Konami's only hope is that the game is good. More people noticed what happened with the Kojima situation than they think, but I think some degree of that will be wiped away by fans if Metal Gear Survive really knocks it out of the park.
