With Soulcalibur VI coming out soon, and another Bandai Namco fighter Dragon Ball FighterZ coming to Switch even sooner, Switch fans are wondering whether Soulcalibur will also arrive on the system after launch. Dualshockers got a chance to ask Motohiro Okubo just that question and he didn't quite rule it out.
"At the moment," Okubo told Dualshockers, "there is no development for Switch at all. I understand that the Switch is a very successful hardware, and of course if there is a possibility, then it would be great to do it. At the moment we’re focusing on the October 19th launch, so we don’t even have the time to think about that possibility. After the launch we’ll think about the possibility.”
Before Soulcalibur VI was announced, rumors were swirling about the possibility of the game coming to Switch with possible representation from Fire Emblem characters, echoing the release of Soulcalibur II on the Gamecube with Link from The Legend of Zelda series. Those rumors didn't pan out, but maybe it was being planned or got producers at Bandai Namco thinking.
The publisher has seemingly taken a liking to later Switch ports, with games like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dark Souls Remastered hitting Switch after they hit other consoles, though the latter is due to a delay. Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition is, at the moment, the only multiplatform game from Bandai Namco that will hit the Switch at the same time as the other platforms.
If Soulcalibur VI comes to Switch, do you think they should bring Link back or mine deeper into Nintendo history?
They definitely could port it to Switch, but the game doesn't run on Unreal Engine 4 like Dragon Ball does, so the port would not be as easy. It would be cool to see, though.
